This Ambition of Mine

Aberdeen is built on some hills, and although I’m not at the top of a hill there is a wee bit of a dip down at the bottom of my road which then climbs up quite high above sea level. This gives me a perfect view when I go over the photocopier and peak out of the corner window. I can see all the way down the hill, past all the big fancy houses and over to a really pretty park then out to sea.

I therefore do an awful lot of the scanning, or ‘oh I’m just waiting for my print’, or really quite a general wonder around the office looking as if I’m on my way to something important, but really out for a walk. When I was younger I never wanted to work in an office, I wanted to be free. I wanted to spend all my hours doing a fun and exciting job, out and about in any weather. Now as I’ve got older I realise I just want to do my own thing, but then there’s money. So because I need money I’d much prefer to do any sort of job that pays me fine enough, keeps me warm and dry, lets me walk in some days at 10 and lets me leave some days at 4. I like the people I’m with, and when its home time that’s when I do the fun or fulfilling stuff. Maybe one day I’ll work the two in together, but for now this is working.

My friends friend is graduating in December and saying she’ll take a year off to find herself. Her Mum has bought her a house and she says she’ll never be found in an office, (God forbid), she is going to DO something with her life…. Well, good luck to her! I can certainly say that I am not jealous of that. When I left Uni it was the worst experience ever. Firstly you have to pay council tax, then just as you earn more you find out there is a threshold for you paying tax-you just never reached it before now. You instantly find all your friends dispersed across the country, you don’t have parties and clubs to visit and the goal you had since you announced you were going to University in your Primary 7 project ‘what I want to do when I’m bigger’ is suddenly gone!

Nope, I would rather be good old boring me. I would much rather let my mind go blank and enjoy the view from the train journey in the morning. I would much rather happily sit and get my work done, but be able to put it aside at the end of the day, or even at lunch time to go and do my own thing. I am more than happy that I will not be contacted at the weekend. This isn’t lack of ambition, my ambition was to go to the wonderful University that I went to. My ambition was to create a lovely home, this is something that I’m doing now and I’m saving for our future home. My ambition really is to have children, whether I give birth or not-they will be little people I help to raise. My ambition is to have a house where other little ones are welcome. It is to have a friendly house with enough money to pay bills, food in the fridge and a warm environment. I couldn’t care less about what I have to do to get the basics-I am more than happy being pleased by gardens, and birds and walks. I delight in cooking for my family. I want people who visit to feel calm, I am so proud if someone snoozes after a big dinner at our home, this is what gives me joy!

Now, I’m just off to post this very important letter…*ah, stepping out into sunshine*

A little of what you need

Saturday was one of those perfect days.  Not because it is actually perfect, but because you feel it is perfect deep, deep down inside.  It was one of those days that the sun was shining, we actually got out of the house and everything seemed to be going well-I needed a day like that.  You couldn’t ever put your finger on it, you knew that it wasn’t just because there was a farmers market in town.  I knew I didn’t feel that way because I got to go on a big walk with Daisy Dog. It wasn’t just because we made a fuss and had a yummy tea.  It wasn’t just down to the fact we added to the wood pile.  It was exactly what we needed, and that alone had the power to heal.
I hope you had a great weekend, we're in the middle of the week now, not long to go until the next one!

Birthdays Are Coming

Birthdays are the most wonderful sorts of days, only surpassed by Christmas Eves in which everybody joins in the excitement. When I was little Birthdays meant wearing a badge on your blazer to school proclaiming your new age. Birthdays were for friends for tea and a party at the weekend in the village hall. They were, quite literally, for jelly and ice cream and musical statues. I hear from friends with little ones about extravagant events and if that’s the way its going, I’m sure my nephews would think I lived in utter poverty with just a game of pass the parcel and party songs which were solely meant for twirling to.

It is TH’s Birthday soon and this year it falls during the Easter weekend. We are having about ten people over and I’d love to do a really pretty theme. I hope to have the house covered in pastel colours and hopefully it will be a nice weekend as we plan to have a BBQ. The kids can be entertained with an egg hunt, and the grown ups entertained by some pretty drinks! I’ve got these cute little glasses and some of those paper straws I’ve seen everywhere. I also bought some Happy Birthday bunting and I think you get really sweet paper plates etc. now so I will get those too. Hmmm, I just need to get a present, eek!

This weekend I intend to sleep.

This weekend I intend to do nothing. I intend to potter at most, but I will not lift a finger if it can be helped. With both TH and I having low level but very annoying colds that can not be shifted with pills and sticky bottles that ooze out pink or green medicine, we think we may just have to do it the proper way…and give ourselves time.
We hope to go to Haddo on our favourite walk, but if it is at the expense of moving out of a cushioned chair on a windy day we will most probably not go at all. We will end up forgoing cups of tea for the very same reason.
No, this weekend, it has been decided, is a weekend for rest and recuperation. This weekend is for big pots of tea. This weekend is for books and old films. This weekend will possibly contain some stitching of things to put away for Christmas and it may even warrant a roast or something similarly slow cooked, but it will contain nothing strenuous.

September

This September is amazing-I love autumn at the best of times, but this is great! Summer was a total wash-out, but autumn could never disappoint as living in the North East of Scotland we are used to wind and gales. So when autumn brings with it an ‘Indian Summer’ we are most joyous indeed!

The beautiful hues of amber permeating the blinds at home and breaking through to gently wake us is the most wonderful way to wake up. The journey to work through rolling fields of spun gold cheer me immensely, and the general demeanour of folk who are used to gloom changes and all of a sudden we are as bright as the sky!

Yes, I think I can get used to this.

When i came back...

Hello Blogging lovlies!!  I see that everyone has been super busy taking off all those extra layers of woolies and getting into the Spring-time mood!
I've just been working....and working.........and working, although i really must admit that i love my job, and can't believe i only started in December.
My plans for keeping busy over the weekend have been really good.  I'm pleased to say that i've done 'something' at the end of each week.  Now, im not claiming that what i've been up to is super exciting, or even very interesting to other people, but we've had a grand old time just getting up to stuff, going on walks, visiting charity shops etc...
Now i really must say that i've not been blogging a lot and that for the last couple of weeks i've been meaning to post about the BLOG LOVE SWAP....Ooops, that was a long time ago...i may upload lots of pics by way of apology.
However, i am beyong grateful to the lovely, funny and very talented Pene over at Scrap my Midlife Crisis which is such a great blog.  Now i have to admit that when clicking on links between recent posts and thereby finding this amazing blog i did firstly click because i saw a cute little westie by the name of Daisy (just like my little madam)...but you can't help but stay on the blog looking at the beautiful makes, funny pics and all round 'good banter'!  Now this very talented lady has done something else very lovely.  She has given me an award!  And (drum roll please) it's my very first one!  I feel awful that i haven't been in Blogland for ages and haven't seen it, but i promise you that as soon as i did click on my little old blog house and saw that i had comments i hadn't read i went away and posted this message right now!!!
So thank you, thank you, thank you!  I am very excited, happy, grateful and touched that you even thought of me!

What makes me Happy

Sometimes when I get away from work early I rush home and get to see daylight.

When I leave for work it’s dark and cold.
And when I come home it’s dark and cold.
But sometimes, on very rare occasions I get home and its still daylight.
And on those very rare occasions that I do get home and if its still daylight I take Daisy out for a walk.
She always gets nice walks, but I do miss the evenings we had in Summer when it was still bright when I got home. So when it’s light enough to go for a longer wonder around the village we go off the beaten track and head over the golf course to the sea.
She runs around and I pad over the sand away in my own little world, day dreaming and planning, and letting my imagination flow where it will.
Daisy on the other hand runs like the wind, drags seaweed along with her, and snaps her little teeth at any shells coming into shore riding on the small waves.

luxury is....

luxury is....
time to enjoy the papers in the morning with a cup of steaming hot tea or coffee.  The tea must be deliciously sweet and utterly tempting, much too milky for others to wish for, but perfect for me.  The cup gets carried carefully back to a warm bed and the tinkling of china stops its bell like warning that I'm walking with hot delicate substances.  The Husband is waiting and we unfurl the papers.  The main paper goes to my partner and i tear into The Weekender.  The plastic packaging is thrown on the floor for now, only to be something I'll slip on later, but for now my head is on a propped up pillow and I'm happily gazing up at my new magazine.  Like all glossies i flick through all of the pages, abandoning the contents page for others, i find what I'm looking for...'readers comments'.  I laugh out uninhibited, for today I'm not on the bus reading, this weekend is the best type of weekend.  I am at home.
I flick through again, and not finding anything to instantly take my fancy i move on to the next section of paper, and the next, and the next...piles of wreckage are strewn around the bed.  Crumpled sheets of paper, messily folded or crushed into squares surround The Husband and i on our once fortnightly life craft of sanity.  Its the best sort of weekend.  I'm not working and its one for pottering.  Everything is lazy and slow.  The roast is slow, our walks are slow, it is comfortable.  For two whole days we are the Lord and Lady of our own little manor.  No rushing, no buying, it is all our own convenience.
The weekend is ours to prod fires, take afternoon naps and day dream with the dog on our knee.

Mary Poppins you sweetheart!

Mary Poppins had a give away not too long ago and i was super lucky to win it!!  It was a whole load of Dorset Cereal bars and a cute lunch bag for me to carry them..
Well, just this morning my Dorset Cereal bars arrived! They are delicious.

Yummy!!
I wish I could do a great big post explaining how happy I was when they came in the post, but I'm still under the weather and cant really muster the strength to tell you how grateful I am.

I have taken these pictures which I hope will make up for this. So from the very bottom of my heart…THANK YOU!

Changes

When I was little I grew up in a small fishing village about twelve miles from where The Husband and I now stay. It was good and exactly how I want my children to grow up. The village was so small that it was easy for me to go about and explore, I walked everywhere with my family and as we owned a yacht (which my Father built-we weren’t rich!) I was always busy and had stories to tell from the weekend.

Once I grew up a bit we moved closer to town. I was a teenager and loved the freedom which came from being able to walk into town anytime I wished. Everything was on my doorstep and I was able to get a job in a clothes shop in town which was lovely. Discount on fabulous clothes, and all my wages spent in my place of work pretty much ensured that we always made a bonus…which invariably was spent back in my workplace!! It was a great time and exactly what I needed at that time.

When I met The Husband, and he was just The Boyfriend I moved into his home. That is probably the oddest time for me. It was my first home of my own, but it wasn’t really- it was his… In that place I didn’t learn to cook and I barely cleaned up after myself….how embarrassing!

I was so glad when we moved to a lovely area in the suburbs; our teeny tiny little flat was perfect. I cooked and cleaned and made it my own. I was so happy and proud, I made an actual home. People visited, and although there wasn’t much space we always made sure people knew they were welcome. That became exactly what I needed. The Husband and I got married, we honeymooned and came back to that flat, it was a physical example of our commitment to each other-we had made a home which one day we hoped a child would move into.

Now we’ve moved into our new home. I now live quite close to my first home ever. I've come full circle and I love it. I know not to expect anything about little ones in this home-but that’s alright. There is now a spare room which is perfect for guests, we now have a home big enough to properly have people over to, and feel welcome in. It’s a wonderful feeling to be that prepared, something I’ve never had before. I know not to think that we’ll be here forever, it’s probably the last thing I say before I find the roof caves in knowing my luck recently, but I know to take things in my stride and start handing things over to ‘The Universe’. I really need to let go and go with the flow, so I am happy to learn that skill…slowly, in our new home.

Bye for now,

Sheila

I have been..

I have been reading some of my Birthday presents..

Eating big bowls of soup, it really is much too cold, wet and thundery for June…

Catching up on house work….

But still having a sit down with a nice mug of tea (and not feeling guilty for not tidying up the flour that went everywhere after making a cake over the weekend!)...

And going on a long drive and playing with Daisy Dog..

Yes, life is good!
